If you’re a parent in Ireland caring for a child under 16 with a severe disability, the Domiciliary Care Allowance is one of the most valuable supports you can claim. It’s not means-tested, so your income doesn’t matter — what matters is the level of care your child needs. Here’s exactly how to get it, step by step, and how Irish Resilience Clinic gets you there.
Step 1: Confirm your child qualifies
Your child must be under 16, ordinarily resident in Ireland, have a severe disability likely to last at least 12 months, and need care substantially above what’s normal for their age. You must also live with the child at least 5 days a week and be habitually resident in the State.
Step 2: Get the application form (DomCare1)
You can apply online via MyWelfare.ie with a verified MyGovID, or print the DomCare1 form and post it to the Department of Social Protection in Longford. This is Part 1-5 of the form, filled in by you as the parent or guardian. If any of it feels overwhelming, we can help you fill it out too.
Step 3: Get the medical report (DCAMed1)
This is the part most families get stuck on. The DCAMed1 medical report form must be completed by your child’s GP or specialist — diagnoses, ICD10 codes, clinical findings, and a full breakdown of your child’s ability across 25 different areas (mobility, communication, sensory issues, behaviour, and more). A weak or vague medical report is one of the biggest reasons applications get refused.
Step 4: Book your assessment with Irish Resilience Clinic
This is where we come in. One phone call books your child in for a full assessment. We carry out the clinical assessment, provide the diagnosis where needed, and write the comprehensive report that goes directly onto the DCAMed1 form — the exact document the DSP’s medical assessor is going to be reading.
Step 5: We turn it around fast
Most families get their full report back within 3 weeks of that first phone call. No waiting months on a public list while the clock runs on your child’s needs.
Step 6: Submit everything together
DomCare1 form, DCAMed1 medical report, diagnosis, and assessment — submit it all to the Department of Social Protection, Government Buildings, Ballinalee Road, Longford, N39 E4E0.
Step 7: Wait for the decision — and appeal if needed
If you’re refused, you have the right to appeal to the Social Welfare Appeals Office. A strong, detailed report from day one massively reduces the chance you’ll ever need to, but we will help you with your appeal letter if needed.
Caring for More Than One Child? You Can Claim for Each
There’s no limit on the number of children you can claim DCA for. If you have two, three, or more children with autism or other special needs, you receive the full allowance separately for each child. So if you have 3 kids who qualify, that’s €380 x 3 every single month (€1,140), plus €2,000 x 3 (€6,000) paid into your account every June as their summer grants. The supports scale with your family’s actual care needs, not just per household.
What is the Carer’s Support Grant?
The Carer’s Support Grant is an annual, once-off payment from the Department of Social Protection, paid every June to people providing full-time care — including parents receiving DCA for a child. It’s not means-tested, and it’s separate from and on top of any other payment you’re receiving. If you’re already getting DCA, it’s usually paid automatically without a separate application, and because it’s paid per care recipient, it stacks for each child if you have more than one qualifying for DCA.
The Economics: Why €975 Pays for Itself
We are the cheapest in the country for this service, and the numbers make it an easy decision:
Do the maths — €380 a month means our fee is covered in well under 3 months, and then it’s pure support for your family every month after that, on top of the €2,000 grant landing every summer. And if you have multiple children qualifying, all of that multiplies. Multiply that out over years of eligibility and the value is enormous, for a one-off cost that’s lower than anywhere else in Ireland.
Irish Resilience Clinic is with you every step of the way
From the first phone call to the final report landing in your hands, we don’t disappear after the assessment. We make sure the report speaks the DSP’s language, covers every area they assess, and gives your application the strongest possible chance.
